Orthodontic Anchors (TADs)

Depending upon your orthodontic treatment needs, your orthodontist may request placement of tiny orthodontic appliances called TADs or Temporary Anchorage Devices. These devices have been utilized since 1983 to speed orthodontic treatment and eliminate the need for orthodontic headgear, lip bumpers and other auxiliary devices or appliances. They serve as anchors for moving specific teeth in a controlled and predictable way. TADs are made of sterile medical grade titanium alloy. They allow treatment of certain cases that were nearly impossible to treat before this technique was refined. TADs are generally placed in our office using a small amount of local anesthetic. Once the TADs are placed, they can be used immediately by your orthodontist.

Home Care of TAD's

If the area of placement becomes sore, either Tylenol or Advil will relieve any discomfort. For the first 48-72 hours, perform warm saline mouthsoaks for 2 minutes (level teaspoon of salt dissolved in 12 ounces of warm water) four to six times a day. After that, as part of your normal oral hygiene regimen, gently brush the TADs to keep clean.

Removal

After your orthodontist is finished using the TAD's for your treatment, he will request that they be removed. Removal often requires no local anesthesia and takes just a few minutes.
